Lisa Carter Grist ‘Quartet, Score, Slip, Stick, Smooth’ 2025
A commission received from Ruthin Craft Centre and CELF, The National Contemporary Art Gallery of Wales to design an installation of art work banners to sit within and interact with the architectural space of Ruthin Craft Centre. The artwork took its starting point from the ceramic work of Betty Woodman (Born: USA 1930 - 2018) whose work ‘Diptych, The Balcony’ is held in the National Art Collection of Wales. A limited edition of 15 related screen prints with additional hand painting were developed alongside the installation of the artworks and are available to purchase. Please enquire.
“Like Woodman I am interested in deconstructing the things that I see and the spaces between them into their component parts. My works are meditations on particular visual sources. Details and absences drawn from basketry, ceramic work and textiles were captured with gestural brushwork in a black calligraphic hand and created using silk screen print. Taking an approach akin to collage hues of colour were added with hand painting to create rhythmic movement. The title refers to the 4 S’s of ceramics, score, slip, stick and smooth the actions that are needed to hold ceramic work together.”
